Organising the LenCD web site

I have set out some initial classifications for materials, which I will list below.  But the classification system will have to adapt to suit the kinds of materials that people contribute, and at this point we don't really know how people will use the site.  So I think we have to consider the taxonomy as something that will have to adapt and change as we discover what sorts of materials people contribute.  Suggestions for logical categories are very welcome!  The classification system is oriented around the purpose of an item, not its format.

Most materials are found in the working groups:

  • Strategy document: includes concept notes, scoping studies, and other strategic-level thinking pieces
  • Work plan: a document that describes a specific plan of action for the working group
  • Request for comments: includes draft documents and anything that is really directly asking for input.  I think having a category named this could be a useful way of really promoting the philosophy that we genuinely want participation from network members.
  • Technical documentation: really only relevant to the Knowledge Management working group, I think, this includes technical reference materials that might be useful to network members.
  • Meeting report: a report from or about a meeting, naturally!
  • Resources: this is sort of an "other" category which I think will need refinement as we see what kinds of things people contribute
  • Resource directories: pages that point people to resources available on other web sites

The other top-level classifications are:

  • Events: Generally meetings of one kind or another.  Before the meeting takes place, the meeting page should have information about the meeting such as the agenda and background readinfs.  After it takes place, the page should be updated to include reports from the meeting.
  • Topics: These were called "resource corners" on the old LenCD web site but I understood that there were quite a few people who didn't find that a satisfying name, so I've taken the liberty of re-labeling them.
  • Case stories: We have quite a few of these in the area that used to be called the "case window" on the old LenCD web site.  I'm moving them over here.
